My child has been 3 years old without having a good routine, always acting cute and spoiled …”
“We have to help my four-year-old child with everything.”
“Though my child is going to be a first-grader soon, he’s too dependent on adults in the family.”
“I don’t know how to teach children discipline at home.”
“I don’t know how to support children in a correct way …”What makes many Vietnamese parents fall into those problems is the incorrect way they use in raising and educating their children.

With only 5 golden principles of Montessori below, parents can easily get to understand children to better assist them in reaching their optimum growth. At the same time, those simple-looking principles also promote the connection between parents and children, giving them quality time together.

1. Respect children: Show your respect to the child’s individual needs, interests, desires, and opinions. Play the role of a guide/consultant in their decision-making instead of forcing them to follow your choices. In this way, you also teach your child to respect other people.

For example: when the child wants to put on a T-shirt though it’s cold outside, instead of rejecting them, you should say how you feel for the child to understand: “I know how much you want to wear this shirt today, but it’s cold and I’m worried that you might get sick wearing this.” Next, you can ask the child: Do you know any way that you can wear your favourite shirt and keep warm at the same time?

By allowing children to make their choices and giving them options to choose, children will feel respected for their interests and hobbies, and they will accept things more easily.

2. Always observe children: Stepping back to observe children will help adults understand and satisfy the needs of each child during their early stages.

3. Allow children to make choices: Instead of forcing, let children make their choices and realise what they want. In this way, children will come to know themselves to make appropriate behaviours to their friends and adults from an early age.

4. Allow children to do what they can do: Have faith in your child and allow him/her to practice daily tasks such as putting on clothes, putting away toys, and preparing their bags. Be sensitive and quick enough to give your child specific instructions to help him/her do what s/he wants. Only by doing things by themselves can children experience, memorise, and improve their skills of independence and self-discipline.

5. Support, not interfere: Instead of violent interference to interrupt their work cycle, you should be available to assist children when they need, to respond to them sincerely and warmly by encouraging and only intervening when they are at risk.
