According to Dr. Maria Montessori, during the early stage from birth to 6 years of life, children are like a sponge absorbing everything around them. At this phase, the brain is strongly developing, facilitating the ability to receive, absorb, and establish linguistic capacity powerfully and quickly. Learning a second language from an early stage apart from their mother tongue helps children build a solid foundation for language and flexible thinking to adapt to whatever kind of learning environment they might be in.
Here at Sakura Montessori, we use 4 English teaching methods in our English program, which is based on Common Core standards and designed by Mount Vernon School (USA). According to that, children learn English with multi senses, which helps them obtain language in the most natural and effective way. They are supported to develop comprehensively, from phonetics, vocabulary, structures, and skills of listening, writing, reading, and speaking, to the ability to respond in English instantly. Those methods are:
1. TPR method (Total Physical Response)
This method is based upon the combination between language and physical movement, which helps children practice their interactions, responses and improve their ability to listen and speak.

2. SSS method (Start Simple Stories)
It helps children develop phonetics, vocabulary, and structure by being read to, listening to, and telling age-appropriate English stories.

3. PPP method (using games, music, pictures, real objects)
It consists of 3 steps: Presentation (teacher’s instructions) – Practice (children’s practice) – Production (children make their own products from what they have learned and practiced), helping children receive and absorb the amount of knowledge delivered by the teacher, then use it in real-life situations.

4. Scaffolding method
It helps children master their own knowledge and skills with the support of teachers. Teachers will give them instructions and assistance as they learn or develop a new concept or skill. Children will gradually learn skills as well as knowledge from simple to complicate, then master and use them in the most natural and fluent way.

By applying modern and creative methods in English teaching, along with a learning environment totally instructed in English, Sakura Montessori is not only cultivating a love for English in children but also helping them understand and use English confidently and flexibly.
