Learning by doing – the innovative and creative method – is becoming one of the modern educational methods in the 21st century. In Vietnam, learning by doing is being used in nursery schools following Montessori philosophy, where children actively learn about the world with their hands.

How do children learn through work at Sakura Montessori? What benefits do children gain from this method?

What is learning by doing?

Learning by doing is the method in which teachers organize learning experiences with actual situations and hands-on materials, with a focus on the learner. According to that, children are invited to join the activity, directly use their hands to practice, and answer questions, problems, or challenges suggested by the teacher.

What are the benefits of learning by doing?

At Sakura Montessori, learning by doing can be seen clearly in the Montessori philosophy that we are using. The same feature of “learner as the focus” helps learning by doing at Sakura Montessori yield the most benefits.

Below are some benefits of learning by doing to children from birth to 6 years old.

Help children establish specific learning outcomes for comprehensive development

The best way for children to practice what they have learned is to allow them to join actual experiences, as they tend to imitate what they see. Therefore, the purpose of learning by doing in particular and Montessori education, in general, is to show children how to do their tasks, so that they can do and learn from them themselves.

In the Montessori lesson at Sakura Montessori, children are given the freedom to explore, to choose the task they want to work with, appropriate to their needs and interests. Children learn through tasks from concrete to abstract in various subjects: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, Math, Culture (Science, History, Geography). For example, in Math, instead of learning numbers by calling or writing them, here at Sakura Montessori, children will first learn about quantities with hands-on materials, in which they use their hands to touch, feel, and manipulate, or with practical materials such as beads (for counting). In this way, children easily access and understand the concepts of numbers.

Children are given chances to construct themselves

At Sakura Montessori, children are free to choose the task they want to work with. The teacher will play the role of an observer to take notes and guide and support children based on their interests, needs, and ability. According to this, when children are working, the teacher will not interrupt or intervene in their work cycle. Interventions are only made when children are in danger, using the materials for the wrong purpose, or bothering other children. By stepping back for observations, the teacher will understand the needs of children and build an appropriate learning pathway for each child, so that they can fulfill their potential.

By using the learning by doing method appropriately, Sakura Montessori provides children with a learning environment rich in practical experiences, allowing them to actively obtain knowledge and skills required for later life.
